Jessica and Andrew came to philanthropy through different experiences, each of which shaped how they saw the world and the work they would eventually build together.
Growing up in a military family, Jessica had the opportunity to see different parts of the world from an early age. Between her upbringing in the United States and time spent with family in Indonesia, she developed a curiosity about people, cultures, and the forces that shape the world around us. Her first job out of college was in development at Nevada Public Radio, where she got an early look at philanthropy and the role it can play in strengthening communities. Her longtime love of nature, biology, and the outdoors have also continued to shape how she sees the world and the issues she is drawn to.
Andrew grew up in Detroit as the son of Polish immigrants and spent much of his childhood going back and forth to Poland. Seeing how his family adapted, built lives for themselves, and found opportunities in difficult circumstances left a lasting impression on him. That sense of resourcefulness and possibility would later shape his own entrepreneurial path and the company that became Relativity.
In 2020, when Andrew had the opportunity to sell a portion of the company, Andrew and Jessica decided to set aside meaningful resources to give back. From the beginning, they intentionally designed Alta Futures to spend down its resources over 20 years, creating a commitment to put meaningful resources to work in the world now.
At the same time, Andrew and Jessica were building their family and thinking more deeply about the world the next generation would inherit. They named Alta Futures after their two children, a reminder of why the work exists in the first place and the future they hope to help shape.
